What are Tissue Losses and Tissue Transfers?

Tissue losses that can occur after cancer surgery, trauma, infection, and other causes can lead to both cosmetic concerns and life-threatening conditions in many patients. Treatment of tissue losses through tissue transfers is the process of placing new tissue from other parts of the body to replace lost or damaged tissues. These surgical treatments are particularly preferred in tissue losses that occur after especially large or deep skin cancer lesions. This healthy tissue is usually taken from an area close to the removed region and transferred to the deficient area.

How are Tissue Transfers Performed?

Different tissues such as skin, bone, and muscle can be transferred in tissue transfers. The aim of this treatment is to replace the lost tissue with new tissue and improve the function and aesthetic appearance of the removed area. Different techniques can be used depending on the location of the loss and the position of the donor tissue to be used. Microsurgery is a technique we use in many tissue transfers and is critically important in transferring the vessels and nerves of the tissues to be transplanted. Tissue transfers can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Patients can usually return home the same day or the next day. However, in some cases, especially in larger or more complex tissue transfers, a short or long-term hospital stay may be required.

In addition to surgery, stem cell and fat injections can also further enrich the outcome.
